Elm and steambent locust form a graceful music stand

The three elm legs were cold molded on the same form. The rear leg is mortised into the top bar of the flowing music, and is removable for travel. Three laminations of locust were steambent into the form of the treble clef, and inlaid into the music rack. Photos of the process can be viewed in the Steambending Process category.

Rolling windows let the outdoors in

Facing each other across the living room, 3″ thick redwood walls slide completely open on heavy duty custom barn door hardware. The inset openable windows provide cross ventilation when the doors are closed. Custom designed hardware pulls the window walls firmly against the exterior siding to seal out the weather. Built in collaboration with Hammond and Company.

Minimalist handrail floats atop 1″ square fir balusters. Handrail integrates the delicate balusters into a surprisingly strong structure.

Laminated, bandsawn transitional curves were custom made to join the linear elements. This view shows the handrail descending from the living room to the lower floor. Collaboration with Hammond and Company.

The extension leaves of this table slide out from under the table top.

Wedge shaped supports allow the leaves to slide out and the table top to descend to their level. By lifting the edge of the table top, leaves can be reinserted to create the doubled top.

The full weight of the table and its contents rests on the mitered leg joints. In order to achieve the necessary strength, welded steel rods were inlaid into all 3 components of the miter joint.

Solid Koa record cabinets with book matched tops. The entire top was sawn from one piece of Koa. To achieve this effect the board was sliced lengthwise and opened accordion style.
